(Written by retired Senior Master Sergeant Keith Baxter)

West Covina High School- On March 13, 2017, retired Colonel Peter Gray visited the school’s Junior ROTC program to conduct a military-style inspection. The unit earned an on overall exceptional rating despite one minor discrepancy.

According to Colonel Gray, he witnessed and exponential increase in the quality of the program since his last inspection in 2013. It was a “happy day” for him because he was not sure what to expect.  Under former leadership, the squadron fared poorly during the last inspection 4 years ago and the unit was on the verge of shutting down.

“The cadets worked very hard and it was very evident to the inspector,” says retired Captain Jesus Acuna-Perez, the program’s Senior Aerospace Science Instructor.  “The rating was a result of teamwork at its finest. We have come a long way and wanted to showcase all of our improvements to Colonel Grey.”

The unit received the highest overall rating of “Exceptional.”  For the cadets, it was also a happy day.

“It feels great to get such a high rating,” Says Cadet Technical Sergeant John Granados. “Thanks to our high rating, we won’t have another inspection cycle for three more years. The pressure is off and now we can focus on doing bigger and better things.”

The squadron will not be inspected again until 2020.

Thanks to the unit’s high rating, the unit was awarded the “Distinguished Unit Award with Merit,” a prestigious achievement reserved for only the highest performing JROTC squadrons world-wide.   It was the first time the West Covina High School JROTC team has received the honor.

Next time you see a JROTC cadet walking around campus with exceptional pride, and a larger-than-average smile on their faces, congratulate them on a job very well done.
